Tips for Admissions Test Success

Although the admissions tests above may vary greatly in specification and format, there is advice that applies to all of them.

Master the three-pass system

These tests are designed to be punishingly tight on time. Do not get stuck by using this rhythm:

Pass 1: Answer the questions you can solve in under 60 seconds immediately. Flag them and move on.
Pass 2: Return to the tricky questions. If you can't solve it in 90 seconds, guess and flag it for review.
Pass 3: Only if you have time, go back to the impossible ones. Do not leave any blanks (there is no negative marking for wrong answers on these tests).

Start with the question stem

For maths-based papers (ESAT/TMUA) and logical reasoning (LNAT/TARA), read the question stem (what they are asking for) before you read the wall of text or data. This primes your brain to hunt for the specific variable or conclusion needed, saving you from getting lost in irrelevant distractors.

The "Rough Work" Rule

Do not scribble randomly. Number your rough work clearly on your paper. If you get stuck and have to skip a question, you can return to it 10 minutes later and instantly see where your logic stopped, rather than having to re-solve the entire problem from scratch.

Handle Section Switches with Care

For tests with multiple sections (ESAT/TMUA, LNAT), the cognitive jump is brutal.

When you finish a section, take 3 deep breaths before pressing "Next" to start the new subject.

Use these 3 seconds to mentally "empty the cache" of the previous topic (e.g. forget Physics formulas when moving to Chemistry).

The Night Before

Do not cram new formulas. Instead, review your "Error Log". This is the list of silly mistakes you made in practice (e.g., forgetting a minus sign, misreading "increase" vs "decrease"). Knowing your personal weaknesses is your greatest weapon.
